Trimming the Capitol Christmas Tree takes a lot of help! For the past year, children across the state of Colorado have worked to create more than 5,000 ornaments that will be placed on the ‘People’s Tree,’ and an additional 1,000 indoor ornaments to decorate companion Christmas trees placed throughout federal buildings around the Capitol.
The ornaments were made to reflect the theme of the 2012 Capitol Christmas Tree, ‘Celebrating our Great Outdoors.’
Once the tree is set in concrete on the Capitol lawn, the Superintendent of the Capitol Grounds will spend approximately a week decorating it with Colorado children’s handmade ornaments. Traditionally, the tree is lit by the Speaker of the House and a youth from the Tree’s home state.
All Colorado youth, ages 5-19, who submitted handmade ornaments for the 2012 Capitol Christmas Tree are eligible to win a trip to Washington, D.C. The lucky youth who wins the drawing will light the 2012 Capitol Christmas Tree with House Speaker John Boehner in early December.
The tree lighting will be streamed live on the web and replayed frequently on CSPAN.
